One Lovely Blog Award – “Game Makers” edition

Hello, this week I’m doing something different again as I’ve been nominated for a “One Lovely Blog Award” by The Twentysomething Social Recluse; thank you again for the nomination. She’s a work at home writer who makes content for Lifehack & Cowbang. She also posts work & life advice, plus other content, on her blog.

one-lovely-blog-awardThis award has the following rules:

  • Thank the nominator & link them.
  • List the rules & display the award.
  • Add 7 facts about yourself.
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers & let them know via a comment.

Before I carry on I should mention that I’ve tweaked the last rule a bit (I’ll explain further down).

7 facts about myself:

1) I didn’t think making games was an “actual job” until I was about twelve. Up until that point I kept on changing what I wanted to do; be an astronaut, an archaeologist, an artist, even a “adventurer”. When I finally realized that making games was an actual career, it just made a lot of sense to me. I was dreaming up worlds in my head, I loved playing games, & the idea of making them just sounded awesome to me.

2) My two best friends & I have this nerdy thing where we call ourselves “the three mages”. We’re all Final Fantasy fans & one day we asked ourselves what job class we would be. One chose the red mage, the other chose the black mage. It took me a while to decide but, I ended up choosing the blue mage (hence the blue wizard’s hat icon I have).

3) I’m a stutterer. For those who don’t know, it’s a ‘variable’ speech impediment marked by involuntary repetition of sounds & words. I don’t think I’m as bad as most stutterers out there (I know there’s some who can’t even utter a full word) but it is still a thing I have to deal with virtually daily.
Now that I think about it, I’ve never done a post about it. I guess its because I don’t want to be known as “that blogger who stutters”. I’d rather be judged by the content of my character & what I love to do.

4) I’m pretty much constantly listening to music. This includes at work & all night when I sleep. As I’m writing this I’m listening to a Dark Souls guitar medley by FamilyJules7x (yes my love of video games includes the soundtracks). I mostly listen to metal (particularly progressive metal) but I also enjoy classical, jazz, blues, funk, reggae, chip tune, pretty much anything; well except for most mainstream music.

5) I have a cowlick. At first I thought it just meant that the front of your naturally hair spikes up (which mine does) but I recently found out that it applies to any section of hair. Yes I’m a very quirky dude :P.

6) My first lucid dream was back in 2011. That was the year I learned about lucid dreaming, & also the year I first watched Inception (I can’t remember if it was the film that got me into it). According to my dream journal, it happened about six days after my first ever journal entry, when I really went for it. If you’re curious about what the dream was I wrote a short, amateur, story about it.

7) I’m either an overtly careful person or a compulsive over-thinker; I think I’m both. What I mean by that is I’ll spend a lot of time just thinking about something before actually doing it. I would add more but I think just mentioning that I’ve been pondering: how to do this post, what facts to include, who to nominate, editing this, etc, since I got nominated will do.

Now here’s where I differ a bit from other award nominee posts. At first I wasn’t sure who I’d nominate but then I got the idea to nominate game makers.

Here are some blogs with people who have at least done something towards making a game:

This is way more than seven but, hey fuck the rules right. For those listed, consider this an “optional nomination” for the One Lovely Blog Award. Don’t feel obliged to do a post about it, I imagine you’re busy enough as it is.

My reasons for nominating game makers:

  • Making games is tough; hell creating anything good is tough. I should know, I’ve been trying to make a “proper finished” game for the past few years now.
  • I’ve come across blogs where someone wanted to make a game but only wrote two posts. Others have gone for longer but fallen silent. I understand that making games isn’t for everyone, that people find other passions, they lose motivation, or life just happens; but still its a bit worrying to see people just give up.
  • Lastly, I do this because I think we need each other. By getting this list together we can see who else is trying to make games & support each other.

I don’t know what this will do for anyone else but, for me, just knowing that some other actual person is trying to do what I’m trying to do helps in some intangible way. I hope it does for you as well.

Thank you for accepting my nomination and doing the award! I like game soundtracks too, and progressive metal – it actually sounds like we have semi-similar music tastes haha. Awesome idea to nominate other people who are making games! 🙂

  2. Hey, Adam! (^ν^)

I’m glad that you still remember me.

How’s your game progress going on?

Sorry for the late response because, yeah I’ve been busy in work and the website migration to a cloud server.

My game dev stalled at the moment because I don’t have enough money to outsource for the 3D models assets.

Wish you all the best and keep in touch man… (^◇^)

  3. Thanks for the nomination! Sorry it’s taken so long to reply, I’ve not had much free time lately.

Just wanted you to know I’m writing up my response right now and it should be live tomorrow 🙂

It does help immeasurably to know others are supporting what I’m doing, and I’m sure that’s true of all game developers. I’ll still trundle on and try and make the best games I can, because if I’m making people happy by making games, then I’m doing something right 😀
